Hi Ladies

I've been asked to review the admin systems and function for a manufacturing plant on a consultancy basis, and report back.

This is something completely new to me and although I've worked as PA/Sec/Admin etc etc for over 20yrs, I've never worked in manufacturing and certainly not on this kind of project.

It would be an excellent step for my business but I'm anxious to say the least! Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated....

Thank you!

Hi Jude
The admin side is pretty standard BUT there may be some other procedures relating to the manufacturing side, eg, recording orders, issuing job cards, purchasing supplies, issuing delivery notes and invoices. Some manufacturing companies have software to do all this, others may rely on Excel spreadsheets. I would imagine periodical work schedules may have to be produced from the information you have input, which tell the staff on the shop floor what has to be produced that week, so that they can allocate machines etc. Some customers may also have deadlines which will affect production. There may also be lead times for the purchase of materials, ie, the supplier needs a certain amount of time to produce whatever you have ordered to enable the product(s) to be manufactured. As there are so many different forms of manufacturing, I can't be terribly specific. I've done extruded tubing produced on the Japanese Just In Time (JIT) system, plastic injection moulding, and paint spraying/powder coating.

Hope this all helps, but if you need any further info, DM me, or give me a call.

An idea might be to follow an order from customer through to completion and see what the current system is.

Look at things like stock levels, information gathering, billing etc. and try to automate as you go!

Thank you both for your replies, much appreciated. Carole, sounds like you have loads of experience in manufacturing!
